back to interesting vinyl
The Beatles on Capitol
smal 2835 Magical Mystery Tour

This particular copy isn't here because it is particularly collectible.
It is here because it presents an interesting challenge in terms of cleaning
it.
We are going to attempt using carpenter's glue to lift the contaminant off
the vinyl.
Elmer's Carpenter glue (yellow stuff)
One drop of glue covers directly the spot to be removed
a disposable piece of canvas is pressed onto the glue
we allow the glue to set up for a period of 24 hours. Here the Lp is
stored safely on an idle record player while the glue cures.
Next Day, early afternoon.
ready to peel the glue off the Lp
It separates with a light "pop" with minimal pulling force. I
It is still there.
Here's a closeup
Following this 'failure', I used another application of Disc Doctor to clean
the Lp again. I played it. The stylus tracked over the
inclusion without skipping, making a mild "pop" noise until it was
past the area.
I still haven't identified just exactly what this contaminant is. The
glue test does indicate that what ever it might be it is firmly embedded into
the Lp. Just a guess; the record has been pressed in recycled vinyl and
that the area we are concerned with is a piece of ground up label, that did not
get completely digested during the recycling process.
