Spotmat 7.3.0 A simpler Spotmat. This one is more like Malcolm's version but with fewer spots and a slightly larger diameter to the paper. There are two layers of watercolor paper bonded together. Stiff yet compliant. The bottom layer is 140 lb (heavy stuff) artists watercolor paper. The upper layer is a lighter grade of watercolor paper coated to accept inkjet ink. The now familiar cork spots are 3/4 inches in diameter and 1/16 inches thick. The underside of the mat is coated with a repositionable adhesive to keep the mat stuck to the platter. The mat does stay adhered to the platter yet is easily removed and re-installed.
Same Celtic graphic pattern but with the spirals removed. Different color scheme. I may try several different shades in the future.
Looking at the air under the record. This is why the Spotmat works. Minimal support decouples the record from the platter and any associated bearing noise. The stylus, as it traces the grooves will induce some vibrations into the vinyl. These vibes dissipate into air before the record turns a full revolution leaving vibration free vinyl grooves for the stylus to trace. All you have to do is listen to this mat to know it works. What I hear with this mat as well as the other Spotmats is a solid low frequency authority and slamminess without bloat. Increased upper frequency details are also typical when compared to other non-Spotmats. No mat I've tried on my Thorens tables really competes with a Spotmat. One other thing; no static issues.
