The suspension and fine tuning of a turntable’s tonearm are key elements in high-quality vinyl playback, affecting the preservation of records and the accuracy of sound. First of all, it is important to make sure that the turntable is installed strictly level: any deviation distorts the operation of the bearings, causes the anti-skating to malfunction, and even affects the tone of the sound. For accurate installation, use a spirit level and adjust the feet or sub-chassis suspension, if provided by the manufacturer.
After leveling, proceed to balancing the tonearm. This process involves achieving a neutral position: the tonearm with the cartridge installed should “hang” freely and horizontally over the record, without pressure or lift.
Then reset the counterweight dial to zero and set the recommended tracking force, most often in the range of 1.5–2.5 g — refer to the cartridge manufacturer’s recommendations and your personal listening preferences.
Anti-skating is the next important step. The forces arising from the friction of the needle and tending to “pull” the tonearm towards the center must be compensated for by appropriate adjustment. Spring or magnetic mechanisms are usually used, with the value set equal to the tracking force. Incorrect adjustment results in a shift in the sound image or distortion in the grooves.
Adjusting the height of the tonearm (VTA) is also extremely important: if the tonearm is positioned too high, the sound becomes bright and overly sharp; if it is too low, it becomes dull and the bass sounds muddy.
VTA adjustment is usually done by ear, adjusting the height until the attack, stage presence, and balance of the ranges are optimal.
In addition to the basic settings, the effective mass of the tonearm plays an important role: it must match the compliance of the cartridge. An incorrect combination causes resonance and degrades the sound, making it heavy, constricted, or lacking in nuance. Usually, this pair is selected in advance based on tables showing the relationship between mass and compliance.
In addition to the tonearm, it is important to monitor the suspension of the entire device: the subchassis, motor bearings, and belt must be well lubricated and clean — otherwise, noise, rotation instability, and sound quality degradation will occur.
In general, precise balancing, adjustment of tracking force and anti-skating, careful attention to VTA and effective mass are not just technical operations, but the basis for clean, dynamic vinyl sound and long record life. Every gram, degree, and millimeter of adjustment affects the music, and the right approach turns the turntable into a source of true audiophile pleasure.
